History of Proyash

To address the difficulties of the family members of the Armed Forces with disable children and the needs of their children; a special school named Sena Sahayok School commenced its journey on July 18, 2006 with 17 students and two teachers. The students were divided into Pre-primary and primary. Therapeutic support has been provided by Combined Military Hospital, Dhaka Cantonment. On 2007, an area of 5 acres at Dhamalcot (present location) was given for the construction of own premises of Sena Sahayok School. The foundation stone for the new building was laid on November 21, 2008. On June 11, 2009, the school was shifted to its own building. Three more centres were built in Chittagong, Bogra and Jessore to maintain the continuity of the educational services of the children who have to move with their parents at their working place. These centres started functioning in 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively. The school was funded by Bangladesh Army, local donations from defense and civil organizations and individuals.

Though the school was initially setup for the children of defense personnel with the name Sena Sahayok School, now it is open for children from all communities and the name of the school has been changed to “PROYASH” which was formally declared on 02 April 2010. “PROYASH” is Bengali word meaning endeavour.

Over the last nine years Proyash has evolved into a multifaceted service delivery organization. The objective of the programmes run at PROYASH is to enhance the quality of life of children and youth with disabilities by providing targeted services to improve their health, education and employment. PROYASH has been established and operates in a manner that can be compared to and benchmarked against other facilities in Asia. This has been achieved through a standard of excellence in training and professional development in disability and special education. The multidisciplinary team at PROYASH is invaluable in this continuous growth. At present, PROYASH has gained both national and international recognition for its contribution and services within the field of disability.

There are many support services that help to run the core programs to improve the quality of services and facilities. The PROYASH campus is envisioned to be an area that can be enjoyed by all individuals regardless of their physical/mental limitations.
